dc.description.abstract The transition toward a circular economy in plastics hinges on rethinking both the materials we use, and the way plastic products are designed, produced, and managed throughout their life cycle. Conventional plastics, while versatile and cost-effective, pose major sustainability challenges due to their fossil-based origins, persistence in the environment, and low recycling efficiency. To address these concerns, researchers and industries are increasingly turning toward material innovations such as bio-based, biodegradable, and chemically recyclable plastics, which offer the potential to reduce dependence on finite resources and improve end-of-life management. Equally important is the adoption of design principles for circular strategies that emphasize durability, reuse, repairability, and ease of recycling. These approaches ensure that plastic products are not only more sustainable in material composition but also in how they are integrated into circular value chains. This review synthesizes recent advancements in both material innovation and design thinking, highlighting how the combination of these two dimensions can extend product lifespans, enhance recyclability, minimize waste leakage, and reduce overall environmental impacts. Case studies and emerging practices illustrate how intelligent design, when coupled with innovative materials, can support closed-loop systems, and enable plastics to shift from being a linear pollutant to a regenerative resource. At the same time, systemic challenges remain, including technological limitations, market barriers, and social acceptance issues. The paper also examines enabling policy frameworks and the role of multi-stakeholder collaboration among governments, industries, researchers, and consumers in driving this transition. By integrating innovation, design, and governance, the review presents a holistic perspective on how plastics can evolve within a circular economy toward a more sustainable future.
